The Other Side of the World by Chun Arthur Wang

The Muscatine Art Center is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, “The Other Side of the Earth” by Chun Arthur Wang. The exhibition will open on Sunday, March 10 and run through Sunday, April 21, 2013. All are welcome to attend an Artist Reception on Sunday, March 17th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Professor Wang’s art is a hybrid of East and West, having lived in China and the United States. Some of his works are in the Western tradition of oils while finding inspiration in Buddhist and Chinese folk art. Visitors to the exhibition will find that Professor Wang’s art absorbs many Chinese concepts and themes such as subjective color, geometric forms, reorganized linear quality and decorative patterns.

Professor Wang states that his works "were inspired by the sweet recall of my past rural life.” Some images capture a brief moment based on observations while others draw on symbolic images from fantasy and poetized landscapes from dreams. Professor Wang has traveled through rural China in recent years and is motivated to express his nostalgia and meditations on the past but also to show his fear about the treatment of the natural environment and a trend towards greater materialism.

Arthur Wang is Associate Professor in the Division of Fine Arts at Columbus College of Art and Design. He received his formal education in both China and the United States where he graduated with his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. His works have been exhibited in China, the United States, Chile, Japan, Mexico and Spain. Many of his works are held in private and public collections including the China National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing, University of Colorado and Ohio State House. He was recipient of an Individual Artists Fellowship from Greater Columbus Arts Council in 2004.

Public programs, art workshops and other events will be held in conjunction with “The Other Side of the Earth” exhibition. A complete listing is available at www.muscatineartcenter.org.
